This is an exciting opportunity to work with the Planning Business Support Team whilst undertaking and successfully completing an administrative based Level 3 apprenticeship programme with the Council and local college. You will form part of a group of Business Support Officers supporting delivery of the Council’s corporate priorities within the Planning Service. The role will start by responding to correspondence and enquiries in a timely manner and will progress with added duties and responsibilities.

Working primarily from a combination of home and Follaton House, Totnes you will need to be organised, be able to work on your own initiative as well as part of the team and have the ability to switch between tasks, sometimes at short notice, in order to meet the demands of the service. With support from the Team Leader, Supervisor and the rest of the team, you will be providing guidance and updates to applicants, developers, agents and Councillors, as well as processing documents relating to planning applications.

The successful applicant will be customer focused, with excellent IT skills preferably with experience of dealing with a wide range of customers. You will also need excellent communication skills both in writing and over the telephone, have good attention to detail and be confident and self-motivated with managing your own workload. You will need a good standard of general education including GCSE at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable administrative experience while contributing to our planning objectives. You will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our services.

  • Remote working with one day in the office in Totnes

South Hams is a local government district on the south coast of Devon, England. Its council is based in the town of Totnes, although the largest town is Ivybridge. The district also contains the towns of Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe and numerous villages and surrounding rural areas.

A full-time job may be offered to the right candidate on completion of their apprenticeship for either an administrator or should the candidate wish they can do further training.

The Apprenticeship consists of:

  • Level 3 Business Administration Standard

You will attend sessions as part of your off the job training throughout your apprenticeship. Most aspects of your training will be delivered on site by the employer, where you will gain all the skills, knowledge and experience to assist you in this role. Your duties will vary from day to day, and throughout your on site learning process you will work closely with experienced members of staff.

You will have regular visits from your designated assessor, who will help you and monitor your progress throughout your apprenticeship programme
