Meraki Lifestyle Salon and Spa are looking for a Level 2 apprentice to join their friendly hairdressing team in Exeter. The employer is looking for someone who is enthusiastic with good social skills, who is creative, and really keen to learn.

The Apprentice’s Role

Duties will include meeting & greeting clients, offering refreshments, reception duties, which involve answering the phone and booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, blow drying and styling hair, also colour and lightening using a range of techniques. Housekeeping duties and supporting other stylists will also be part of your day.

You will study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection, alongside environmental and sustainable working practices. There is also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.

You will also be required to attend weekly college masterclasses to cover additional practical training, alongside structured theory sessions to enable you to cover the Level 2 Hair Professional Standard requirements.

Wages £192 per week based on a 30 hour week. National Minimum Apprenticeship Wage is currently £6.40 per hour. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will be working 30 – 35 hours per week (5 days) between Monday – Saturday. Possible late night training session once a week.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement pro rata (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Having completed the Level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards a Level 3 Advanced and Creative Hair Professional Standard, to further enhance your skills.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team, and to be able to portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Personal Qualities

Excellent communication skills and a high standards of hygiene and appearance are essential. Being a keen team player is also a requirement for any salon apprentice. You will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the Hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include A/9 – E/1 in English and Maths or the equivalent, for example functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

  • Level 2 Hair Professional Standard
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

All aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification, Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
