Brook House Hair and Beauty are looking to take on a hairdressing apprentice to join their busy salon in Plympton.

The Apprentice’s Role

As a Hairdressing Apprentice, you will play a vital role in supporting the salon’s operations, learning essential skills, and contributing to a positive and welcoming client experience. Your training and hands-on experience will set the foundation for a successful career in the hairdressing industry.

- Client Services: Assist senior stylists in providing exceptional client service, including greeting, consulting, and ensuring client comfort.

- Shampoo and Conditioning: Perform hair washing, conditioning, and scalp massages, using appropriate products and techniques.

- Styling Assistance: Observe and support experienced stylists during hair cutting, colouring, and styling procedures, while gradually gaining hands-on experience.

- Appointment Management: Help schedule client appointments, manage the booking system, and assist in preparing clients for their services.

- Product Knowledge: Learn about various hair products, tools, and equipment used in the salon, and assist clients in selecting and purchasing products.

- Sanitation and Safety: Follow strict salon sanitation and sterilization protocols, maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

- Learning and Development: Actively participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance hairdressing skills and stay updated with industry trends.

- Customer Interaction: Interact with clients in a professional and friendly manner, addressing their questions and ensuring their needs are met.

- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with salon staff, assisting in coordinating schedules and services for efficient salon operations.

- Professionalism: Maintain a neat and professional appearance, uphold salon standards, and demonstrate dedication to the apprenticeship program and the salon’s objectives.

- You will also be required to attend college sessions once a week to undertake additional training which will enhancing your theory and practical elements.

Working Hours: You will be working between 30 and 40 hours per week (5 days) between Tuesday – Saturday. Late night training will be provided, day yet to be confirmed.

Wages: £192 per week, based on a 30 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Once having completed the level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards an advanced level 3 to further enhance your skills.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate must be friendly and approachable and have excellent communication skills. You will be able to work well in a team portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times.

Personal Qualities

Excellent communication, high standards of hygiene and appearance and a keen team player are essential for any salon apprentice, and you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Prior Qualifications

No prior qualifications are required, just a passion for hairdressing and ability to communicate effectively to clients and staff.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Some aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.

As an additional qualification, Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
