Course Overview

This comprehensive SiteRight/NOCN accredited one-day Abrasive Wheels course equips participants with the knowledge to correctly identify, select, inspect, and fit various types of abrasive wheels onto a range of tools. This course will also provide delegates with the correct knowledge level to operate a petrol driven cut off saw safely.

The course includes a practical component where learners will practise selecting, inspecting, and fitting wheels for specific tasks.

What You’ll Learn

The course aims to provide participants with a thorough understanding of safety practices related to abrasive wheels, along with a foundational knowledge of the industry. By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Understand the required PPE when using a cut-off saw, and demonstrate correct use of a helmet, ear defenders, goggles, visor, face mask, gloves, and safety boots.
  • Machine Safety: Learn about the safety features of the cut-off saw, and how to carry out pre-start checks to ensure the machine is in a safe condition.
  • Kickback Prevention: Understand the causes of kickback and how to avoid it through proper handling techniques.
  • Wheel Selection and Installation: Learn how to choose the correct wheel for the machine and application and demonstrate how to fit it safely.
  • Site Safety: Understand the importance of conducting a site assessment before starting work and demonstrate how to refuel the machine safely.
  • Machine Operation: Learn and demonstrate the correct techniques for starting the saw from cold and for cutting material on the ground.
  • Dust Suppression and Spark Safety: Understand how to use dust suppression and how to adjust the guard to control the direction of sparks.
  • Transport and Storage: Demonstrate the correct method for carrying the machine on-site and understand the need to remove the wheel before placing the saw in a vehicle.

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a SiteRight/NOCN accredited certificate valid for 5 years.

This course is designed to meet the needs of operators, supervisors, and anyone responsible for the safe use of abrasive wheels in a variety of settings. Whether you’re new to the industry or looking to refresh your skills, this course will provide the essential knowledge and practical experience to ensure safe and compliant operations.
