Lee Julian are looking to take on an Apprentice Bricklayer to work on their construction sites around the South West.

The Apprentice’s Role

The apprentice will receive full training and support throughout their apprenticeship and be supervised at all times on the construction site.

You will be working alongside other builders which will give you the opportunity to gain experience in other home improvement activities that are carried out. Due to the nature of the work, a CSCS card is required to be able to get onto the building site, and training on this will be given if you pass the interview stage with Skills Group.

Work duties will include

  • Safe working practices
  • Labouring
  • Setting out work areas
  • Understanding and Interpreting information
  • Preparing mortar by hand
  • Using specific tools required for tasks
  • Measuring materials and cutting
  • Keeping all work areas clean and tidy
  • Manual Lifting

Working Hours: 40 hours per week Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. This may vary slightly depending on workload and travel time.

Wages: £256 per week, potentially increasing with performance related pay reviews throughout your apprenticeship.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Lee Julian are Plymouth based contractors undertaking works from large housing development sites to extensions, new builds and all other masonry projects. Due to undertaking new projects they are keen to employ a Level 2 Bricklaying apprentice to join their busy and dynamic team.

On completion of your Level 2 Apprenticeship with Lee Julian, an opportunity to apply for a full time post may be offered to the right learner. Alternatively, you could go on to complete your Level 3 in Bricklaying, or, go on to be self-employed and start your own company.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate should be eager and keen to succeed within the construction industry. You will need to be able to cope with the physical demands of the role. Good communication is required to work well within a small friendly team. You must always be on time and prompt with the work you carry out.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate needs to have strong motivation to work hard and to a high standard to succeed in this role. You will need to be confident and outgoing as well as enthusiastic about the Construction Industry.
Being able to work at heights would be desirable as you will be working at on scaffolding and platform towers, both indoors and outdoors.

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required for the position, however a keen interest in construction and willingness to succeed are essential.

The Apprenticeship in Bricklaying includes:

  • Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship
  • Functional Skills Maths and English (If GCSE Maths and English are not at Grade C/4 or above)
  • CSCS training to be provided.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.

I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!

I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
