DW Brickworks are looking to recruit a Bricklaying apprentice to join the team in Plymouth, to work on various construction projects from house renovations to new build sites in and around Devon, they currently working in Kingsbridge.

The Apprentices Role

Your work duties will include:

  • Safe working practices
  • Labouring
  • Setting out work areas
  • Understanding and interpreting information
  • Preparing mortar by hand
  • Using specific tools required for tasks
  • Measuring materials and cutting
  • Keeping all work areas clean and tidy
  • Manual Lifting.

The apprentice will be supervised at all times working closely with the employer to learn all aspects of bricklaying.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, times will vary depending on the site location.

Wages: £211.20 per week, based on 40 hours per week. To be reviewed regularly based on performance.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

DW Brickworks have got over 9 years experience. They are a close knit team and take on various private work, including renovation projects and extensions to working on different sites, generally know more than an hour away from Plymouth.

Past Apprentices

DW Brickworks have a history of supporting apprentices throughout their qualification.

On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship with the company, an opportunity for full time employment will be available for the right candidate, or you will be able to start your own business as a self-employed bricklayer.

Skills Required

The successful apprentice will need good practical skills, the ability to work in an accurate and organised manner and an awareness of Health and Safety. You will also need the ability to work as part of a team and a good level of fitness.

Good communication skills, be able to work as part of a team and take instructions are all also essential.

Personal Qualities

In order to be successful for this role, you will need to be passionate about the construction industry, reliable and motivated. You will also need to have good time keeping as construction workers are on-site early in the morning.

Prior Qualifications

No prior qualifications are required, but must have good practical skills and be passionate about construction.

The Apprenticeship in Bricklaying includes:

  • Level 2 Bricklayer Standard
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.

I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
