FAQs

When can I take on an apprentice?

Whenever you want to! We recruit 52 weeks of the year, so you aren’t restricted by the academic year.

How long does an apprenticeship take?

An apprenticeship lasts for at least 12 months. Depending on the trade and the level, it can take longer.

How much should I pay an apprentice?

Offering a desirable wage will help attract the best candidates. From 1 April 2017, National Minimum Wage is £3.50 an hour for apprentices aged 16-18 and those aged 19+ in the first year of their apprenticeship.

What about national insurance and tax?

Employers no longer pay National Insurance contributions for apprentices under the age of 25. Apprentices are liable for tax, but only if they are earning above the current personal tax allowance of £11,500 per annum (c. £221 per week).

What are the employment terms and conditions?

An apprentice is entitled to the same benefits and rights as all other employees. This includes sick pay, holiday pay, pensions, childcare vouchers and employee support.

How much holiday is an apprentice entitled to?

All apprentices are entitled to a minimum of 20 days’ paid holiday a year, plus bank holidays. All holidays must be agreed by the employer and apprentice in advance.

Can I get any help with the costs of taking on an apprentice?

There is a £1,000 Apprenticeship Grant for Employers who take on a young person aged 16 to 24. If your business is in the Construction sector, you may also be entitled to Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) grants of up to £10,250. Your training coordinator will be able to give you more information about these and the eligibility criteria.

When do they come to Skills Group for training?

This varies according to sector, but is normally for one day a week. Your designated training coordinator will provide you with further details on training centres.
