Skills Group played host to a party of Slovenian engineers at their engineering training centre in Langage earlier this month, as part of a visit organised by Tellus College.
Skills Group is a Plymouth-based apprenticeship training provider, and works with a number of top local employers to support the development of apprentices in a number of sectors. Last year Skills Group refurbished its engineering and automotive facilities with new industry-standard equipment.
Visiting Engineering Lecturer, Aleksander Vrščaj, said: “It is very interesting to see how other countries approach their vocational training. The facilities at Skills Group are very impressive, and it is good to hear that engineering employers still value the toolmaking skills that underpin the different specialist areas.”
The apprentices trained by Skills Group spend one day each week at the training centre working alongside specialist trainers in either engineering (maintenance, mechanical manufacturing, operations, fabrication and welding) or automotive (vehicle maintenance, repair, body repair and body paint). Skills Group also offer our full-time programme designed to provide an overview of the many career opportunities within the sector and prepare young people for employment.
Tellus College has arranged the Slovenians’ visit as part of a fact-finding trip to explore how engineering and automotive training is delivered in the UK. They intend to bring over a group of Slovenian students to the West Country next year to participate in training and work placements with top local engineering companies.
James Gilbert, Skills Group’s Engineering Training Coordinator, said: “It’s always a pleasure to show off the Skills Group facilities, especially as we have recently invested in refurbishing the workshops.”
Nikki Foster, a Tellus College Work Placement Officer, said: “This group of Slovenian lecturers were keen to find out about engineering training in the UK as they are aiming to send their students on work placements under the EU’s Erasmus+ scheme next year. We are confident that the visit to the Skills Group facility has demonstrated that Tellus College can offer the students an enjoyable and valuable experience in Plymouth.”
Skills Group provides apprenticeship training for business administration, care and early years, construction, engineering and automotive, hairdressing, sport and leisure, and teaching and education. The provider currently has over 180 vacancies across Devon and Cornwall, which can be seen on its dedicated recruitment website, www.apprenticeships4me.com.
