The Original Barber Shop are looking to take on an apprentice to join their team in Tavistock.

The Apprentice’s Role

Throughout your level 3 apprenticeship you will learn the basics of babering and work with clients to build your confidence and communication skills.

As a barber you’ll specialise in male hair grooming this will include a range of techniques including cutting and colouring hair, trimming and shaving of beards and moustaches and sometimes even eyebrow waxing when required. The successful applicant will be specifically trained in cutting men’s hair and familiar with certain techniques pertaining to male grooming, including clipper work, scissors-over-comb and hot lather shaving with a straight blade.
You will learn many new skills including being able to colour, set and style hair practising on models throughout your training. Barbers are becoming more reliant on technology to communicate with their clients, and to promote their services, styling team and latest offers, you will develop your skills to use social networks in a safe and professional way.

Throughout each day you will assist in keeping the barbershop clean and tidy, following all company processes and procedures, including health and safety in the workplace and making sure that all the equipment used is put back in its rightful place. This will help the barbershop run more smoothly and efficiently.

Working Hours: You will be working 40 hours per week, over 5days, between Monday – Saturday. The salon is open for one late night per week until 8.00pm. Shift pattern will be arranged at the start of the apprenticeship.

Wages: £156.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

The original Barber shop in Tavistock offers a comprehensive range of cutting, colouring and dressing hair services for male clients. With years of experience and a highly trained staff we provide everything from a simple trim to a complete new look. We pride ourselves in our 5 star service. With this vast experience we are ideally placed in supporting young apprentices entering into a career of barbering and would be hoping for someone to grow within the company and progress accordingly.

Once you have completed the level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to work towards either a level 2 in hairdressing or possibly be Full-time employed.

Skills Required

The successful applicant will need to have a passion for barbering they must also have good communication skills and confidence to speak comfortable to new people. Ability to work under pressure, as well as good problem solving skills and flexibility.

Personal Qualities

You will need to have a passion for barbering and creativity, along with good communication skills, which are essential as you will be in direct contact with customers.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications desirable for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent such as functional skills, but not essential as having the enthusiasm and a willingness to succeed are more important.

The Apprenticeship in Barbering includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

Some aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.
