The Hair Lounge are looking for an enthusiastic person to join their team. This modern unisex salon is based in Tavistock which attracts a varied clientèle of all age ranges.

The Apprentice’s Role

The ideal candidate will be fully supported through their apprenticeship programme by a qualified member of staff who will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to know to fulfil your qualification.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will learn how to combine this with creative hairdressing and barbering techniques to meet the individual requirements of your client.

You will master colouring, cutting, setting and styling skills through ongoing practice sessions on models in preparation for your assessment on clients. You will also be given a chance to learn scalp massage this will help you learn customer service skills and gain confidence to interact with different clients and asking them how the service you are given is expected.

Salons are becoming more reliant on technology to communicate with their clients, and to promote their salon services, styling team and latest offers, therefore their apprenticeship training includes an ICT element that enables learners to develop their skills to use social networks in a safe and professional way.

You will be supervised throughout your training by a skilled member of their team, where as part of your duties you must keep the work area clean and tidy throughout the day. You will also be made aware of company processes and procedures including Health and Safety in the workplace.

Working Hours: The successful apprentice will be working 40 hours per week, over 5 days, between Monday and Saturday

Wages: £166.00 per week. Any hours worked above 40 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.

Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

The Hair Lounge are a local Tavistock hair salon who pride themselves on their attention to detail and offering a unique tailored experience for each client. They strongly believe in the company’s ethos of delivering the best customer journey, with the most up to date and creative services in a relaxed but professional atmosphere. The salon owner has been a qualified hairdresser for many years which means she is very supportive of her staff and always on hand to help. The salon also offers an extensive range of the latest styling equipment and products.

On completion of the level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards an advanced level 3 to further enhance your skills.

Skills Required

•The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team, and to be able to portray a positive, friendly attitude to interact well with clients at all times.
•Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.
•Good timekeeping and attendance are also very important for this position, together with a focused approach to all the duties that you carry out.

Personal Qualities

•The employer is looking for a candidate who is bubbly and friendly as you will be working with a variety of clients that come into the salon.
•Candidates will need to be friendly and energetic, be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a passion for the Hairdressing industry.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include GCSE grades A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent, as these are required for the initial induction process.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

Some aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 6 to 12 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.

I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
