Split Endz located in Newton Abbot are seeking a friendly and positive apprentice to join their bustling hair salon.

The Apprentice’s Role

You will be given duties such as booking in appointments, answering the telephone, washing/drying hair, styling and learning how to mix and apply hair colouring. You will master colouring, cutting, setting and styling skills through ongoing practice.

You will study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection, alongside environmental and sustainable working practices. There is also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.

You will also be required to attend arranged college sessions to cover additional practical training alongside structured theory sessions to enable you to cover the Level 2 Hair Professional Standard requirements.

Working Hours: You will be working 30 hours per week, Monday – Saturday (Salon is closed Wednesday). Possible late night training session once a week.

Wages: £158.40 per week, based on a 30 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement pro rata (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Split Ends is a bustling Newton Abbot based salon offering cutting, colouring and styling for customers for over 30 years! With a growing list of loyal clients, this busy salon is perfect for aspiring hair stylists looking to gain hair skills and fully immerse themselves in their passion for hair.

Once you have completed the level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to work towards either a level 2 in barbering or an advanced level 3 in hairdressing.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team, and be able to portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times. You must also have good time keeping skills.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate will need to be outgoing, friendly and presentable, with high standards of hygiene and appearance. You will need to be an enthusiastic team player within the salon, which is an essential part of how the salon runs, demonstrating this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include;

GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 9-1 equals to A*-G) desirable
GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 9-1 equals to A*-G) desirable

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

  • Level 2 Hair Professional Standard
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (As required)

All aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification, Skills Group will help you achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
