Skin Deep Salon is looking for a Hairdressing Apprentice to join their friendly team in their modern salon is based in Plympton.
The Apprentice’s Role
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and self-motivated. You will be learning new skills and knowledge throughout your time with the employer and you will be given duties to successfully complete your qualification in Hairdressing.
Duties are likely to include meeting and greeting clients, shampooing and removing colour, conditioning, drying and styling hair. With a combination of off-the-job training and on-site support within the workplace; you will learn Hairdressing skills which you will be able to put into practice which will help to build confidence to use your imagination when creating hairdressing masterpieces.
Working Hours: 5 days between Monday to Saturday between 6am-8pm 40 Hours. Shift Patterns to be discussed in interview.
Wages: £172.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.
Skin Deep is a contemporary salon which was first established in 1986 at the Ridgeway in Plympton. In 1996 the salon moved to St Stephens Place shopping mall in Plympton. The salon has been established for 27 years and has experience with working with trainees. They have had many apprentices that have successfully completed their training and have remained in the salon.
At Skin Deep their primary aim is to offer a customer service that is second to none, they specialise in the very latest trends and also the more classic cuts. They have a dynamic team of stylists who are customer focused and great stylists. They use only top quality products such as Redken The products are of the highest quality and are used in colouring and conditioning, along with a full range of retail products to follow up with at home.
On completion of the level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards an advanced level 3 to further enhance your skills.
Excellent communication, high standards of hygiene and appearance and a keen team player are essential for any salon apprentice, and you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.
Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the Hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.
Being a team player is a vital part of becoming successful within a salon and you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.
Qualifications required for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent, as these are required for the initial induction process with Skills Group.
The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:
• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English
Some aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 6 to 12 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.
As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.

You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.
I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!
I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!
Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.
