Passion Hair and Beauty are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Hairdressing Apprentice to join their team in Plymouth.

The Apprentice’s Role

The ideal candidate will be fully supported throughout the apprenticeship programme by a qualified member of staff who will teach you all the skills and knowledge you need to know, to successfully complete your training to become a fully qualified stylist.

The salon experience generally starts at the hands of the apprentice, so you will be learning how to carry out scalp massages to clients, helping them to become relaxed and at ease, ready for their hairdressing experience.

Your duties are also likely to include booking appointments with clients for the salon stylists, shampooing, conditioning, drying, styling, mixing and applying hair colouring. You will also study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection.

Part of your training includes an ICT element this enables you to develop your skills to use social networks in a safe and professional way. This will help you to promote the salon services, styling teams, latest offers and promotions. As part of your apprenticeship you will also be required to attend training sessions weekly which will enhance your theory and practical elements.

You will be shown all the company processes and procedures including health and safety in the workplace, making sure that all work areas are kept clean and tidy throughout the day. Your duties will vary from day to day, and throughout your on site learning process you will work closely with a qualified stylist from Passion Hair Salon who will support you in your learning. The successful candidate will also be able to attend the training academy for master classes if authorised/required by the employer.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will be working 37 hours a week, shift patterns to be discussed.

Wages: £159.10 per week, based on a 37 hour week. Any hours worked above 37 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.

Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Passion Hair and Beauty are a unisex salon who have a mixed clientele, catering for all their clients needs. They have been established for over 5 years and now and have 10 stylists from the well trained youngsters to those who have been stylists for over 15 years.

The salon boasts an extensive range of the latest styling equipment and products this includes award winning Keune, Matrix and Bed Head Tigi. The hair, nail and beauty salon also offer other pampering services to their clients such as botox, tanning and flabelos sessions, together with special occasion packages for birthdays, valentines and wedding days.

Their team of hair stylists and beauty therapists are very passionate and dedicated to give their clients the best possible service and experience on every visit to the salon. Their aim is to meeting all their clients requirements and expectations, making sure they leave the salon looking and feeling good about themselves.

On completion of the level 2 qualification, there will be an opportunity to work towards an advanced level 3 to further enhance your skills.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team, and be able to portray a positive friendly attitude to interact with customers at all times.

Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Good timekeeping and attendance are also important for this position.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate will need to be presentable, outgoing and have high standards of hygiene and appearance for this role.

You must have a genuine interest to undertake an exciting career in hairdressing.

You will need to be confident in answering the telephone and have a pleasant personality to talk to clients face-to-face.

You will need to be enthusiastic, have a creative flair and show a willingness to learn and develop to progress through your training to become a qualified stylist.

Desired qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include A*-E in English and Maths or the equivalent, for example Functional Skills.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 6 to 12 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.

I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!

The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
