This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic hairdressing apprentice to join the team in Plymouth based along North Hill.

The Apprentice’s Role

Throughout your apprenticeship you will be given duties such as booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair. Along with mixing and applying hair colouring.

The salon experience generally starts at the hands of the apprentice; learning the art of scalp massage will help put your client at ease and ready for their cut.

You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types. Duties are likely to include blow-drying, booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colouring. You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection – there’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will be working between 30 and 40 hours per week (5 days).

Wages: £192 per week, based on a 30 hour week. Any hours worked above 40 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.

Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Once having completed your Level 2 qualification, you will have the opportunity to work towards your Level 3 to further enhance your skills.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate must be friendly and approachable, will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well in a team, and to be able to portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the Hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Personal Qualities

Excellent communication, high standards of hygiene and appearance and a keen team player are essential for any salon apprentice, and you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent such as functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

Most aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 3 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.
