Envy Hair Salon have a great opportunity for an outgoing and friendly hairdressing apprentice to join their team in Plymstock, Plymouth.

The Apprentice’s Role

During the first stages of the apprenticeship you will be given general duties such as booking in appointments, answering the telephone and talking to customers along with shampooing, conditioning and drying hair. This will be a great way to interact with customers and gain communication skills in the salon with new and old clients.

As you progress through the apprenticeship you will start to learn about other areas of hairdressing, such as learning how to style hair and mixing and applying hair colouring. You will study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin and the principles of hair colour selection. There is also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.

Although safe working practices underpin the success of every salon, you will learn how to combine this with creative hairdressing and barbering techniques to meet the individual requirements of your client. You will master colouring, cutting, setting and styling skills through ongoing practice sessions on models in preparation for your assessments.

Your duties will vary from day to day, but throughout your learning process you will work closely with a qualified stylist who will support you in your learning. The successful candidate will also be able to attend the training academy for master classes if authorised/required by the employer.

Working Hours: You will be working 30 hours per week, Monday – Saturday. Possible late night training session once a week.

Wages: £192 per week, based on a 30 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement pro rata (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Envy was born from a genuine love of hairdressing; a passion that has continued to grow over the last twelve years. First opening for business in June 2000, owner and founder Tracie Gunningham quickly developed a loyal client following thanks to her commitment to giving customers a highly professional salon experience. Originally home to just five styling chairs and three stylists, Envy soon outgrew its first premises.

In June 2003 Envy moved to The Broadway, Plymstock and Envy BWY was born. In September 2012, with the continued success of Envy BWY, Tracie launched her second salon, Envy RWY, in Plymouth’s prestigious Royal William Yard.

Now employing a team of over 25 stylists and junior stylists, Envy continues to offer high quality hair styling, premium hair treatments and unparalleled customer service.

I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to Vanessa, my trainer. You have made my journey so much easier, I don’t know what I would have done without you. You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.

Katie Shorland, Level 2 Hairdressing

I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!

Jaimee Benson, Level 2 Hairdressing

I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

Will Birch, Level 2 Bricklaying

Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up

Sam Collard, Level 2 Light Vehicle and Maintenance Repair

The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.

Ben Freeman, Level 2 Carpentry

I would just like to thank you and your team for all the amazing work they do, you have provided me with the most invaluable experience which has helped to pave the way of my future. The work you do for young people is incredible!

Luke Kowalski, Teaching Assistant and former apprentice at Sir Robert Gefferys School
