Hairdressing Apprentice

A vibrant hairdressing salon in Exeter are looking for an individual to start as a Sunday team member, with the potential to become a hairdressing apprentice in June.

The Apprentice’s Role

The successful candidate needs to be motivated and enthusiastic in order to assist stylists in delivering constantly high levels of service, and to ensure that company policies and procedures are carried out. As part of your duties you will participate in training sessions and work towards timely completion of your level 2 qualification in hairdressing. The candidate will be managed by the Salon Manager, but will also work very closely with other stylists.

You will be assisting stylists in ensuring that all clients are given the highest levels of customer service with special attention to comfort and friendliness. You will also generate and promote a professional working atmosphere and assist stylists by informing clients of all services available, including products, tools and equipment available for retail purchase. You will also make sure that work stations are kept clean and tidy at all times. You will carry out a wide range of duties such as, colouring, cutting and shampooing.

By assisting the salon manger and the stylists, you will gain the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to help you to progress in this exciting career opportunity. You will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff throughout your training, and you must follow health and safety procedures in the workplace at all times.

Working Hours: You will be working 40 hours per week between Monday – Saturday. You will be required to work at least one late night per week. Shift patterns will be arranged at the start of the apprenticeship.

Wages: £156.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Past Apprentices

Amanda Marsden has several apprentices through Skills Group and are keen to welcome another.

Through having completed the level 2 qualification in hairdressing, you will then have the opportunity to progress onto the advanced level 3 apprenticeship.

With the experience and the skills you have gained, you can use these to maximise the opportunities to further your career at the end of the apprenticeship programme.

Skills Required

You will require good organisational and leadership skills, and be confident in order to fulfil this role. Ability to work under pressure, as well as good problem solving skills, and flexibility would help you in this role. You must be able to work well within a team and on your own. You will also need to be reliable and have good time keeping and attendance.

Experience of IT would be an advantage for this role.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate will need to be familiar with current trends within the hairdressing and fashion industry. You will need to be highly motivated and enthusiastic about hairdressing with a friendly personality, to interact efficiently with customers and colleagues.

You must be motivated and passionate to undertake this exciting opportunity, and progress in your chosen career.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include A-E in English and Maths or the equivalent, for example functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

All aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 2 to 4 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.

I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!

I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
