Cornwall Construction Training Group’s annual apprentice awards evening took place earlier this month, with a Skills Group apprentice scooping an award.
Harry Courtis, a Plastering apprentice with C&P Plastering Contractors Ltd, won the Specialist Trade Award for his commitment, endeavour and application.
The ceremony was held at St Mellion International Resort and this year’s guest speaker was former world light-heavyweight boxing champion John Conteh.
Harry joined Skills Group’s full-time construction programme in February 2015, unsure of what he wanted to do. After trying all of Skills Group’s Construction trades, he found that he had a natural ability for Plastering and completed his Level 1 Construction Crafts qualification before being offered a two-week trial with C&P Plastering.
Impressed by Harry’s work, C&P took him on as a Level 2 apprentice and he is now progressing onto his Advanced Level 3 qualification in Plastering. The CITB judges said Harry’s enthusiasm, determination and dedication stood out.
Paul Pomeroy, Director at C&P Plastering, said: “Ever since Harry joined us from Skills Group he has shown phenomenal hand skills and the ability to work in a team. It has been a pleasure teaching him and working with him. I’m sure he has a very bright future ahead of him in our trade.”
Mandy Kerslake, Skills Group’s Apprenticeships Manager, said: “We’re very proud of our apprentices and all that they achieve, so it was fantastic to see Harry’s hard work recognised at the CCTG Awards.”
Katherine Wildman, Skills Group’s Construction Training Coordinator, added: “We have seen Harry’s confidence increase as well as his ability to plaster since he joined our full-time construction programme last year. I knew he would be an excellent match with C&P.”
