This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to learn all aspects of flooring. You will work locally and across the south of England and Wales with the fitting teams for a busy flooring company based in Portishead.
The Apprentice’s Role
Whilst with the employer you will be carrying out a range of tasks, where you will be observing the practice of the experienced floorlayers, learning about the materials used, prepping the floor area for coatings, and undertaking flooring application yourself.
The successful candidate will be required to have good interpersonal skills, be self motivated and have a willingness to learn as well as being trustworthy and able to communicate with customers/colleagues. You will be required to do lifting and carrying of carpets and other flooring equipment maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
When attending the college at Skills Group, as part of your qualification, we will arrange for you to take your Health and Safety Environmental online test to have the opportunity to to apply for your CSCS card in order to be able to carry out site work if required by your employer.
Working Hours: The typical working hours will be 8.30am – 5pm, Monday to Friday, occasionally Saturdays will need to be worked.
Wages: £156.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any additional hours worked above 40 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.
Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, which will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Tom & Lee have both been working within the flooring industry for many years, in fact, over 16 years combined trade experience at various companies.
They have previously successfully trained an apprentice with the company and they are still employed as a floorlayer beyond their qualification. This has given the company the confidence to invest in a young person again and to offer the opportunity, to the right candidate, to achieve the qualification whilst earning a wage in a rewarding profession.
On successfully completing your apprenticeship you will be offered employment. The employer is looking to train you to their high standards and offer a job beyond your apprenticeship following their investment in you and your qualification.
You will then have the chance to gain the years of experience required to be an excellent floorlayer beyond your qualification.
You need to show a keen interest in flooring and be hardworking with an ability to work on your own initiative. If you are well mannered and presentable and have good communication skills when dealing with customers then this will serve you well in this sector. The role is physically demanding at times so a good level of fitness is required. Good hand skills and an enjoyment of practical, hands-on learning will put you in a position to excel in flooring.
You should have a keen eye for detail and be physically fit to undertake much of the role. Pride in your work is necessary and as some of the work will involve measuring and in time, pricing work, good maths knowledge is desirable.
Honesty and good personal skills with a friendly, outgoing nature are important for this position.
No formal qualifications are required for the position, however a willingness to succeed and undertake a national recognised qualification is essential.

Attendance is required at our our Skills Group training centre on 1 week block release sessions, every 8 weeks as part of your training course. When you are with us you learn sub-floor preparation, carpet fitting, floor tiling, impervious and vinyl to help develop your hand skills and these sessions are set out over six visits.
We provide your accommodation, food and collection to and from the training centre whilst with us for these weeks. You have the opportunity to carry out tasks using our indispensable high quality materials ensuring when you return to your employer the following week you have improved your hand skills as well as having a greater knowledge of each area of floorlaying.
You will be supported throughout your training by one of our dedicated assessors. As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
