S. Smith and Sons Carpets Ltd, are looking to take on a Floorlaying Apprentice to join their team.
The Apprentice’s Role
In the early days of your flooring career you will be expected to learn the ropes of the business and variety of flooring tasks carried out. The more experienced you are, the more responsibilities and tasks you will pick up.
To start out, the job will consist initially of fetching, carrying, carrying and tidying around materials, whilst observing the Senior Fitters laying the flooring. The first skills you will learn will be sub floor preparation to include underlay and grippering which is required for each job.
When you have picked up the basic tasks you will start to learn more about the materials and floorcoverings used and how to fit them. The types of flooring you will be dealing with are; carpets, vinyl’s, wood, luxury vinyl tiles and commercial flooring. When you have built up the skills required you will be given more tasks which can include measuring up the rooms and speaking to customers about the types of flooring you are fitting.
You will be required to take instruction from the Senior Fitters and work closely with them to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible throughout the early days of your flooring career. You will have one to one support which will give you a head start in the industry.
You will be working in people’s homes mainly so will need to be polite and well mannered, whilst promoting S. Smith & Sons Carpets at all times.
Working Hours: The working week is Monday to Friday. There are occasions when overtime will be available during busy periods and some earlier starts or later finishes will also happen from time to time as you work to schedules to finish jobs on time.
Wages: £188.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

S. Smith & Sons Carpets Ltd provide array of flooring services, this local based company (Marsh Barton and Exeter) have secured a range of contracts both domestic and commercial. Their installation and supply team work mainly in the South West of England, mainly Devon and Somerset, Cornwall and Dorset, however they have also completed works further afield.
You need to be physically fit and able as the Apprenticeship will be strenuous due to carrying heavy materials, as well as have stamina for the job in hand. A good level of communication skills will be required as you will be working in a close knit team and communicating with customers on a daily bases.
It would also be an advantage to role to have a good a maths ability due to the nature of the role.
It is essential you are able to work in a team and willing to learn. You must listen well to instructions given, be well mannered and polite.
Grades A-E in Maths and English or equivalent would be beneficial, but practical ability and a willingness to learn new skills in a new trade will help your application.
The Apprenticeship in Floorcovering consists of:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations
◾Level 2 Diploma in Floorcovering – Textile and Impervious
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding
Attendance is required at our our Skills Group training centre on 1 week block release sessions, every 8 weeks as part of your training course. When you are with us you learn sub-floor preparation, carpet fitting, floor tiling, impervious and vinyl to help develop your hand skills and these sessions are set out over six visits.
We provide your accommodation, food and collection to and from the training centre whilst with us for these weeks. You have the opportunity to carry out tasks using our indispensable high quality materials ensuring when you return to your employer the following week you have improved your hand skills as well as having a greater knowledge of each area of floorlaying.
You will be supported throughout your training by one of our dedicated assessors. As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency First Aid and Certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
