Oltco is expanding their company and would like a hardworking apprentice to join their Groundworks team in Plymouth.
The Apprentice’s Role
The successful candidates will gain experience within a construction site environment, as a Ground worker. Performing duties such as excavations, site waste removals, foundations, engineering works, drainage, external finishing, top soil, landscaping, tarmac, kerbing, paving, concreting works, placing internal drainage and connecting external drainage. Foul and storm drainage including manholes varying in size from concrete. This role will also include general site laboring duties as required during the working day. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of the construction environment, ideally within Groundworks or general labouring but its not essential.
As the Groundworker / Resin Bound apprentice for Oltco Plymouth, you will play an integral part in the preparation works and installation of resin surfaces.
This involves carrying out the groundworks required to ensure the surfaces are suitable for the resin installation. Once groundworks have been completed, you will work with the team to complete the resin installation in both the mixer and troweller role. You will be reporting to your line manager, Ben Ure and working closely alongside him on a day to day basis.
Your responsibilities include: Digging out an area to the correct depth, Installing edgings, Installing drainage, Installing base layer / concrete, Mixing and trowelling the resin, Mixing and trowelling concrete, Ensuring the workspace is always clean and tidy, Discussing requirements with the customers, Planning access for customers and the team
Working Hours: Your working hours will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
Wages: £166.00 per week with added incentives for overtime. Any overtime above 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage, depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

On completion of your Level 2 apprenticeship with the company, the right candidate may have the opportunity to progress within the company.
The potential apprentice will be keen and motivated, professional and hardworking is also a must.
You must be friendly and hardworking as well as be able to take direction well, you must also have excellent communication skills and be focused at all times.
GCSE English and Maths at C or above would preferable but not necessary.
The Apprenticeship in Groundworks consists of:
Level 2 Ground Worker Standard
Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.

You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.
I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!
I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!
Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.
I would just like to thank you and your team for all the amazing work they do, you have provided me with the most invaluable experience which has helped to pave the way of my future. The work you do for young people is incredible!
