Michael Grimwood Bricklaying is looking for a new bricklaying apprentice to join his team in Lucerne Fields (Ivybridge) and the surrounding areas.
The Apprentice’s Role
Michael Grimwood Bricklayers primarily work on new build properties in the Devon and Cornwall area. At present they are working on Barratt Homes – Lucerne Fields New Build Development.
You will be working alongside other builders so no experience is required. Due to the nature of the work, a CSCS card is required to be able to get onto the building site, training on this will be given if you pass the interview stage with Skills Group.
The apprentice will receive full training and support throughout their apprenticeship and be supervised at all times on the construction site.
Attendance at Skills Group Training Centre will be required to undertake a Level 2 Trowel Occupation Diploma, consisting of 1 day per week.
Work duties will include:
Safe working practices
Setting out and preparing work areas
Preparing mortar by hand
Applying and sealing foundations with materials that are damp-resistant.
Spreading and removing excess mortar
Applying bricks, blocks and pavers in lines or following decorative patterns or designs
Clearing up work space after each day and cleaning tools.
Inspecting vertical and horizontal brick alignment.
Using specific tools required for tasks
Working Hours: 40 hours per week Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm. This may vary slightly depending on workload and travel time.
Wages: £156.00 per week, potentially increasing with performance related pay reviews throughout your apprenticeships.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Michael Grimwood is a fully qualified bricklayer with over 10 years experience within the Industry, specialising in New Build Developments. Michael Grimwood Bricklaying are currently working on Barratt Homes Lucerne Fields New Build Development Site in Ivybridge and are looking to expand their workforce by taking on a new apprentice.
On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship with the company, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the level 3 in Bricklaying and join the well-established team full time.
You will need to be eager, keen to do well and willing to learn within the team, be able to cope with physical demands of the role and manual labour, good work ethic, punctual and good timekeeping.
Strong determination to work hard to a high standard. They will need to be outgoing, confident and enthusiastic about working in the Construction Industry.
A good head for heights would be desirable as you will be working at heights on scaffolding and platform towers, both indoors and outdoors.
Qualifications required for this role include GCSE's grades A* – E in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.
The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:
•Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
•Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
•Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
•Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
•Emergency First Aid
•Certified Health and Safety Course
•Internet Safety / Safeguarding
As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
