GH Walters and Son is looking for a Carpentry Apprentice to join their well-established firm in Liskeard.
The Apprentice’s Role
As a carpentry apprentice you will learn all aspects of carpentry and joinery, Yelverton Construction cover every aspect of creating a new build home, including imaginative design, local authority approvals, impeccable standards of construction and professional project management. You will be expected to learn how to measure, cut and build using materials. You will be working with wood on a day to day basis and must be precise with all of your work.
The successful apprentice will learn other aspects of the building and construction trade to enhance and develop knowledge within a variety of building projects.
Due to the location of the role, transport will be required.
Working Hours: The working hours will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.
Wages: £192.40 per week, any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.
G.H. Walters & Son is a family-owned business that has been working since 1960 to provide South East Cornwall with the highest industry standards in bespoke building services. George Walters began the firm in 1962 and it became a partnership with Scott in 1995. It was renamed, G.H. Walters & Son. Since George's retirement, Scott now runs the company himself.
On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to gain a full-time job in carpentry. Alternatively, you will be able to gain some experience within the trade, and then progress onto your Level 3 NVQ in Carpentry.
Skills Required
The successful apprentice will need to be able to understand and follow instructions quickly and precisely due to the high level of work they will be completing. They must work to specific deadlines on all tasks and will also need to be physically strong in order to meet the demands of this role. They will need to take pride in their work and have good communication skills to deal with customers and colleagues.
Personal Qualities
You must be a good team player with the motivation to succeed within a busy construction industry. The successful applicant will need to be reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic with a genuine interest in the carpentry sector.
Prior Qualifications
GCSE or equivalent grades A-E (9-2) or equivalent is desired but not essential.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
