Gary Nicholls Bricklaying is currently looking for a bricklaying apprentice in Plymouth to join his team, this bricklaying vacancy is based on new build sites in and around the Plymouth and Devon area.

The Apprentice’s Role

The apprentice will be supervised at all times working closely with the employer to learn all aspects of bricklaying. As mentioned in other areas of the vacancy attendance at Skills Group Training Centre will be required to undertake a Level 2 Trowel Occupation Diploma. Your work duties will include safe working practices, labouring, setting out work areas, understanding and interpreting information. You will be taught how to prepare mortar by hand whilst using specific tools required for tasks. You will be measuring materials and cutting using these tools whilst keeping all work areas clean and tidy. You must be physically fit and have an element of strength as a lot of manual lifting is involved within this apprenticeship.

Working Hours: You will be required to work 40 hours per week, specific working hours will be discussed upon successful application to the job.

Wages: £148.00 per week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Gary Nicholls Bricklaying are based in the Plymouth and Devon area and have built up an extensive reputation for outstanding work complete and service. They are keen to employ a Level 2 Bricklaying Apprentice who is passionate about construction and is willing to learn and progress within their experienced team.

The employer will be keen for the successful individual to progress onto the their advanced Level 3 apprenticeship after they have completed their level 2 framework.

Skills Required

The successful applicant will need to be keen to succeed, reliable and hardworking. Ability to cope with the physical demands of the role and able to use their own initiative is essential.

Personal Qualities

The applicant must be reliable and motivated to work within the construction and undertake national recognised qualifications. Have good communications skills and able to work as part of a team and take instructions. Good time keeping as construction workers are on site early in the morning and preferably should be physically fit with stamina.

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required for the position, However a keen interest in construction and willingness to succeed are essential.

The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
