Bricklaying Apprentice

This local bricklaying employer is looking for an enthusiastic apprentice to join their team to assist in the day to day building activities in Plymouth.

The Apprentice’s Role

The apprentice will be working on sites with KIER, they will be required to sit their CSCS test prior to taking on the role which will be sat at the Skills Group to ensure that you are health and safety worthy before going onto site. You must be willing to learn a new trade and must be happy to work in all conditions. The apprentice will be expected to work as part of a team, block-laying, bricklaying, laying foundations and labouring.

You will be required to carry out duties such as building and repairing walls in accordance with construction plans. You will also be taught how to lay out structural frameworks for buildings using bricks and mortar.

The successful apprentice will be shown how to use specialist tools and equipment from operating a cement mixer to preparing mortar to cutting and shaping bricks to fit corners. The apprentice will learn to use plumb lines and spirit levels to check that the bricks are aligned correctly. During your working day you will be using a range of other specialist tools ranging from hammers and trowels to state-of-the-art power tools.

Working Hours: Your working hours will be Monday to Friday, 08.00 to 17.00. There may be times where you will be required to work additional hours.

Wages: £148.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

On completion of your level 2 apprenticeship you will progress onto the level 3 qualification.

Skills Required

The successful applicant is expected to have basic hand skills and knowledge of the trade. They must also be hardworking and happy to learn.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant must have good time keeping, be able to work within a team which means they will have excellent social skills which will also come in handy when working with clients. Importantly the applicant must be extremely hardworking.

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required for the position but GCSE grades A-E is desired. However a keen interest in Bricklaying General building and willingness to succeed are essential.

The Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
  • Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
