A small, local plastering company in Plymouth require a plastering apprentice to join their team to work on various construction sites across Devon and Cornwall.

The Apprentice’s Role

As an apprentice you will learn a variety of plastering and construction skills, along with how to mix the correct ratio of plaster to apply to walls and buildings, this will include learning how to skim and render correctly. You will also be expected to use a variety of equipment safely.

You will be shown how to skilfully use a hawk, trowel and other specialist plastering tools in order to complete jobs to a high standard. The apprentice will be expected to conduct other construction work such as preparing the work area and tidying on the construction site.

When you are working on-site you will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff, and will be shown all the correct procedures, including health and safety in the workplace. Along with ensuring that your work area is clean and safe, and that all the tools are cleaned and put away correctly at the end of each day.

Working Hours: The working hours will be around 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with timings to be confirmed.

Wages: £256 per week, any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

You will carry out all types of plastering and is a registered external insulation applicator. The company carries out work within Plymouth and the surrounding areas.

On completion of your Level 2 apprenticeship with the company, an opportunity to apply for a full time post may be offered to the right candidate.

Skills Required

You will need to have excellent hand-eye coordination and a willingness to succeed, you will need to have good communication skills and work well within a small team. You will need to be outgoing to work on large construction sites and have the confidence to ask for direction when needed.

Personal Qualities

You will need to be friendly, confident and a great team player, you will also need to be enthusiastic about the construction industry, especially plastering.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role include GCSE’s grades A-E in Maths and English, or the equivalent qualifications for the initial induction process with Skills Group.

The Level 2 Apprenticeship in Plastering includes:

Level 2 Plastering Standard

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

As part of your apprenticeship Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, which will enable you to apply for your CSCS Card. This shows that you are at the required competent level to carry out site work with the employer.
