Craig Hillary Building and Maintenance are looking for a maintenance apprentice to join their team in Plymouth.

The Apprentice’s Role

As the apprentice you will be expected to work hard on a daily basis and experience all construction trades, you will be taught how to work quickly and efficiently as well as safely at all times. You will expected to experience all aspects of construction such as carpentry, painting and decorating, brick work and plastering.

On daily basis you will be tidying the construction site, carrying tools, shadowing colleagues and undertaking jobs which are set out for you within a general build/ Maintenance trade route.

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours a week. Hours may vary slightly depending on workload and travel time.

Wages: £156.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Skills Required

You will need to be hardworking, reliable, keen and friendly, you must be able to work in a team and have good communication skills in order to work with colleagues and speak to clients. You must possess excellent time keeping skills and be precise with your work. A passion for the construction industry is essential.

Personal Qualities

You will need to be keen to succeed, reliable, hardworking and have the ability to cope with the physical demands of the role. Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail would also be an advantage to the right candidate

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are required for the position, however a keen interest in construction and willingness to succeed are essential.

The Apprenticeship in Maintenance consists of:

◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Maintenance
◾Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding

As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre for one day per week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer#. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated Skills Group assessor, who will monitor your progress during your apprenticeship training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. You will develop your hand skills, carry out brick and block work, learn the correct use of specific tools, carry out pointing and learn mortar ratio mixes under the guidance of your assessor. Learning all these additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve your Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety Certificates, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
