They are looking for keen individuals that would like to start and progress with career in the Railway. The work involves general groundwork and civil construction work on railway infrastructure.

The Apprentice’s Role

The work involves general groundwork and civil construction work on railway infrastructure for instance: repairs to bridges, walls, crossings, tunnels and emergency call outs to embankments slipping or to make damage to infrastructure safe for the passage of trains. Apprentices will learn their groundworks skills with Skills Group, whilst Coyle Personnel train them on the railway specific skills required. Once basic railway skills are gained you will be working with Balfour Beatty Rail’s current workforce where you will gain experience working on track repairing damage to infrastructure in the south west region.

You will be required to work some nights and most weekends as part of your role. The work is always outdoors and often in the wind, rain and cold.

Due to the nature of the role the successful candidate will have to be over the age of 18. You will be travelling over the country and will need to be able to cope being away from home not being in parents care.

Working Hours: Minimum 40 hours per week, could be rostered to work day shifts, night shifts and WILL include weekend (day or night).

Wages: £6 per hour to start with. Increases with periodic performance reviews. This equates to £240.00 per week.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Coyle Personnel PLC started in 1986 as a supplier of construction staff and progressed into the railway soon after. Today we are one of the UK's leading suppliers to railway construction companies including Network Rail, Siemens, Amey & Balfour Beatty.

This particular role will be an ongoing placement with Balfour Beatty Rail, one of the largest and most successful construction companies in the world. Both Coyle Personnel PLC and Balfour Beatty have had apprentices.

We are looking for people who would like a career in the railway, not just a job. Once you have passed your apprenticeship there are many avenues with the railway you can take to progress your career to a higher level i.e foreman, supervisor and management.

Skills Required

No experience necessary but a background of construction or labouring work would be an advantage.

Personal Qualities

You will need to be hard working, reliable, you must have good time keeping as this is a necessity for the role.

Prior Qualifications

No formal qualifications are needed for the role. Training will be provided by Coyle Personnel PLC & Skills Group.

Additional Requirements

The Apprenticeship in Railway Groundworks includes:
◾Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Groundworks
◾Level 2 Diploma in Groundworks
◾Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
◾Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
◾Emergency First Aid
◾Certified Health and Safety Course
◾Internet Safety / Safeguarding
◾PTS (Personal Track Safety)

After the training probation period further railway qualifications can be obtained (Lookout, Controller of Site Safety)

Attendance is required at our training centre for one day per week. Your training will consist of part knowledge and part theory, whilst the rest will be practical. During this time you will be shown the necessary hand skills required to use specialist tools, carry out duties such as plastering and skimming, rendering, dry lining work, floor screeding and fibrous moulds. Learning these skills will benefit you on returning to your employer.

You will also have the opportunity to complete additional qualifications in Emergency First Aid and certified Health and Safety, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

Skills Group will also support you to complete your online CSCS test, in order to apply for your CSCS Card. This will enable you to carry out site work with the employer when required.
