The Apprentice’s Role
Meredith Flooring are looking to take on an apprentice to increase their team and provide excellent training through the apprenticeship programme. The office is based in Salcombe, applicants are welcome from all areas however you must be able to get to Plymouth each day.
In the early days of your flooring career you will be expected to learn the ropes of the business and variety of flooring tasks carried out. The more experienced you are, the more responsibilities and tasks you will pick up.
To start out, the job will consist initially of fetching, carrying and tidying around materials whilst observing the Senior Fitters laying the flooring. The first skills you will learn will be sub floor preparation to include underlay and grippering which is required for each job.
When you have mastered the basic tasks you will start to build on your knowledge of the materials and floorcoverings used and how to fit them. The types of flooring you will be dealing with are; carpets, vinyls, laminate, luxury vinyl tiles and commercial flooring then when you have built up the skills required you will be given more duties which can include measuring up the rooms and speaking to customers about the types of flooring you are fitting.
You will be required to take instruction from the Senior Fitters and work closely with them to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible throughout the early days of your flooring career. You will have one to one support which will give you a head start in the industry.
You will be working in people’s homes mainly so will need to be polite and well mannered, whilst promoting Meredith Flooring at all times.
Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 40 hours a week.
Wages: Wages will be £156 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any additional hours worked over the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

We are a local father and son family business of carpet fitters with over 40 years experience, trading from Salcombe, near Kingsbridge, Devon. We pride ourselves in giving a friendly personal service and on the quality of the carpets & flooring that we supply and the high standard of our professional fitting.
Meredith Flooring have supported the apprenticeship programme for many years. They are now looking to increase their current team and invest in the right candidate.
On successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, the right candidate will have the opportunity to stay with Meredith Flooring to further your career, progressing to a Junior Fitter and with time to a more senior role.
You need to be physically fit and able as the Apprenticeship will be strenuous due to carrying heavy materials, as well as have stamina for the job in hand. A good level of communication skills will be required as you will be working in a close knit team and communicating with customers on a daily basis.
It would also be an advantage to role to have a good a maths ability due to the nature of the role.
It is essential you are able to work in a team and willing to learn. You must listen well to instructions given, be well mannered and polite.
Grades A-E in Maths and English or equivalent would be beneficial, but practical ability and a willingness to learn new skills in a new trade will help your application.
The Apprenticeship in Floorcovering will include:
• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations
• Level 2 Diploma in Floorcovering – Textile and Impervious
• Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1)
• Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test – CSCS Test
As part of the apprenticeship programme, attendance is required at our Skills Group training centre. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site by the employer.
Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical. Learning additional skills will benefit you on returning to the employer.
I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to Vanessa, my trainer. You have made my journey so much easier, I don’t know what I would have done without you. You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.
I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!
I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!
Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.
I would just like to thank you and your team for all the amazing work they do, you have provided me with the most invaluable experience which has helped to pave the way of my future. The work you do for young people is incredible!
