An excellent opportunity has risen for a child care apprentice within a pre-school in Exeter.

The Apprentice’s Role

As a child care apprentice, you will be expected to play an active part in the personal, social and emotional development of the children in your care. You will support all abilities and encourage positive relationships and social skills. Physical development is also encouraged and you will help the children to be active and make healthy choices.

You will be involved in:
•Setting up and tidying away equipment each day
•Helping with story time, along with interacting with children in their activities and games.
•It will be important to work as part of a team and follow all Health and Safety and hygiene procedures within the workplace at all times.
•You will learn to work within the team to ensure the smooth day to day organisation and operation of the nursery.

Working Hours: This position will be 30-40 hours per week, shifts will be discussed at interview.

Wages: £148.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

They are an independent purpose built pre-school set in their own grounds, offering outstanding care and education for children aged 2-5 years. Their approach is one that is personal to the individual needs of the child, an approach which allows smooth transition from their home life into school life allowing for individuality with support and nurture. The pre-school was registered in 2001.

Past Apprentices
The pre-school are currently supporting apprentices. They have also supported further progression to level 3 for those who have successfully achieved level 2.

The ideal candidate will be supported through to the next level of qualification upon successful completion of level 2.

Skills Required

You will need to be enthusiastic and be able to engage with the children of all ages. Listen actively to children and respond with warmth and empathy. Good communication and interpersonal skills with children, colleagues and parents are also essential.

You must possess the ability to work as part of a team but also to work independently with the children on activities and development. Understand the importance of confidentiality and have an enjoyment of caring and playing with young children. The successful apprentice must also have a hands on approach and a can do attitude showing a level of maturity.

Some previous childcare experience would be advantageous.

Personal Qualities

The successful applicant will need to be highly reliable and show a good level of maturity, with a flexible attitude to work. An up-beat attitude and somebody who shows enthusiasm whilst supporting the children on a daily basis is also essential. You must have a bright and friendly personality which can help to create a warm, family environment. An ability to communicate with the children, staff and parents is also an essential part of the role.

As an apprentice, you must be able to work with other adults and be able to demonstrate good teamwork skills, along with being able to understand instructions and seek clarification when required, whilst showing a good level of maturity.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A-E in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as functional skills.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

  • Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health and Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

All aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
