A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an apprentice in a local child care setting in Plympton ,Plymouth. Plympton St Maurice Childcare Centre are currently looking for an additional apprentice to join their enthusiastic and hard working team.

The Apprentice’s Role

As a child care apprentice, you will play an active part in the development of the children in your care, so you will be expected to have excellent observational and communication skills.

Supporting, observing and monitoring children’s play is crucial to support socialisation skills with other children and adults, and can include activities such as reading to children, teaching simple painting and drawing skills, taking part handicrafts and singing songs.

You will help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use.

The role will require you to support and update record keeping on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered whilst in your care.

You will be supervised by a fully qualified member of staff, who will assist you with your training, and you must follow all Health and Safety processes and procedures in the workplace at all times, making sure that all equipment used is clean and put away correctly at the end of each day.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be committed to training and have the enthusiasm to help the children to learn, develop and have fun.

You will be involved in all the childrens activities including reading books, painting and drawing sessions and many more activities, making each day that the children attend interesting and exciting.

Working Hours: 4 days a week totalling 35 hours per week, shifts to be discussed on success of apprenticeship.

Wages: £136.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Plympton St Maurice Childcare Centre is situated on the primary school site along with Plumtree Children's Centre. It is a purpose designed, spacious and colourful environment, which has excellent facilities to support children to achieve their future goals and create positive memories.

The nursery has been well established and has been open since 1996, during this time they have built excellent relationships with very loyal customers and prepared many children for their first steps into school. The pre school is OFSTED approved. The centre has a baby care unit, a toddler unit and a pre school unit.

Child Care provision at Plympton St Maurice caters for 0-5 years and pre-school children. Being situated in Plympton it has excellent transport links, making it very easy to access.

On completion of your Level 2 qualification in Children and Young People, you will become a qualified Childcare Assistant.

You will be given the opportunity to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship to gain additional skills and knowledge, which will set you up for a continued career in the child care sector.

Skills Required

•The successful candidate must have good communication and listening skills and be able to interact well with adults and children.
•Health and Safety is very important, so a responsible attitude and the ability to follow procedures is required.
•You will need to work well within a friendly team, so good team working skills and a friendly attitude are desirable for this position.
•Great leadership skills, organisation and confidence would be an advantage, with the ability to work under pressure, as well as good problem solving skills and flexibility.

Personal Qualities

•You will need to be enthusiastic, responsible, and keen to succeed in your chosen career.
•The successful apprentice will need to be fun, reliable, and outgoing and have a willingness to learn in a busy nursery that is focussed on providing high quality child care.
•Good timekeeping and attendance are also important for this role, with a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate different drop off and collection times by parents.

Prior Qualifications

•Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A-E in Maths and English or the equivalent qualifications.

The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:

•Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce
•Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
•Employment Responsibilities and Rights
•Emergency First Aid
•Certified Health and Safety Course
•Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
