An exciting opportunity has arisen for two child care apprentices with Humpty Dumpty Childcare in Dartmouth.
The Apprentice’s Role
The role will require you to support and update records on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities and meals served. You will be expected to follow their policies for confidentiality and to report appropriate information regarding children and their backgrounds to the Day Care Leader.
Whilst working at this nursery, you must take into consideration the individual needs of the children respecting race, religion and culture, along with having an awareness of social needs and being sympathetic to their emotional needs.
You will also help children to understand and demonstrate good health, hygiene and personal habits during meal times, rest periods and bathroom use.
Working Hours: The working hours will be between 30 and 40 hours per week on a rota basis, hours will be between 7.30am and 6.00pm.
Wages: £156.00 per week, based on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.
Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

The nursery may consider supporting progression for the right candidate upon successful completion of qualification.
You will need to be reliable, enthusiastic, up-beat and able to work in a flexible way. You must listen actively to children and respond with warmth and empathy. Good communication and interpersonal skills with children, colleagues and parents are also essential.
You will need to have the ability to work as part of a team but also to work independently with the children on activities and development. You must understand the importance of confidentiality. The successful apprentice must enjoy caring and playing with young children and have a hands on, can do attitude.
The successful applicant will need to be highly reliable with a flexible attitude to work. You must have an upbeat attitude and be somebody who likes the outdoors and shows enthusiasm whilst supporting the children on a daily basis
A bright, bubbly personality which can create a warm, family environment will be welcomed within the nursery, by the children, families and staff. As an apprentice, you must be able to work with other adults and be able to demonstrate good teamwork skills, follow instructions and seek clarification when required.
An ability to communicate well with children, staff and parents is essential.
Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A-C in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as functional skills.
In order to be successful for this position, you will need to complete an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. This will be arranged by the employer after successfully completing the initial interview.
The Apprenticeship in Child Care includes:
Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will help you, and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.
As an additional qualification you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.
I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to Vanessa, my trainer. You have made my journey so much easier, I don’t know what I would have done without you. You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.
I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!
I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!
Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.
I would just like to thank you and your team for all the amazing work they do, you have provided me with the most invaluable experience which has helped to pave the way of my future. The work you do for young people is incredible!
