Compton Valley Nursery and Preschool are looking for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Apprentice to join their friendly team in Paignton.

The Apprentice’s Role

You will be involved in assisting in the planning of the children’s play time, and engaging children in learning and play activities. This is an important part of your role as it will help to build your confidence and ability to work with young children. You will be required to update paperwork, and support other team members across all areas of childcare to ensure that the children are stimulated, nurtured and enjoy their time with us.

You will also work as part of a team providing high quality care, play and learning opportunities for children aged from three months to five years. Ensuring that the safety and welfare of every child at the nursery is paramount at all times, and that children’s individual needs are identified and met at all times. You will assist in planning learning and development activities for children at the nursery and sometimes supervise and lead planned play activities, as directed by nursery staff.

Develop an understanding of the requirements of the EYFS and to apply this understanding when supporting children in their care, learning and development and to promote equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will be working a minimum of 30 hours per week between Monday and Friday.

Wages: £129.00 per week, based on a 30 hour week. Any overtime above the 40 hours per week, will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage.

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Compton Valley Nursery and Preschool is a family run setting situated in a beautiful rural location that allows for rural walks and outdoor play in all weathers. They have a highly motivated team of staff who are committed to providing a safe, nurturing atmosphere where all children are able to thrive and achieve their full potential.

They provide 3 separate play rooms for the children in their care. These consist of a baby room, toddler room and a pre-school room. All of their rooms are designed to create a homely and family atmosphere with carpets and sofas in every room as well as a high standard of play and learning resources. All rooms have their own team of staff who plan for individual learning through a superb range of activities.

They have a dedicated team of staff who are experienced in delivering the Early Years national curriculum and committed to promoting the well-being of each child in their care.

Since 2008 they have been awarded 3 consecutive Outstanding Early Years Provider Awards by OFSTED, and in their most recent inspections they achieved an Outstanding grade in every area of provision.

Prior Apprentices

Over the past few years they have had a number of apprentices, working towards their Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, most of them are still part of their highly motivated team.

Due to the success and progression of their previous apprentices, they are now looking for a new level 2 apprentice to join their team and become a valuable asset to their organisation.

Skills Required

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications required for this role, include GCSE grades A*-C (9-4) in Maths and English or equivalent qualifications such as Functional Skills.

Additional Information

In order to be successful for this role, you will need your own transport due to the location of this nursery.

The Apprenticeship in Childcare includes:

  • Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Standard Apprenticeship

Most aspects of the qualification and training will be delivered at your workplace where you will be supported throughout your training by your employer. You will have regular visits every 6 to 12 weeks from your designated assessor who will help you and monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As an additional qualification, you will also achieve Emergency and Paediatric First Aid, and a Health and Safety Certificate, along with Internet Safety and Safeguarding.

I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up
