Andrei Avasilosaie: A Rising Star in the World of Groundworks

In the world of construction, where hard work meets skill, Andrei Avasilosaie, a Groundworks Apprentice working with Classic Builders, is making quite a name for himself. As you’ve probably seen, he was crowned YBUK Apprentice of the Year 2023 and recently a finalist in the Building Plymouth Apprentice of the Year. Andrei’s journey is capturing attention and admiration.

Andrei started his learning journey at Redruth School, meeting Classic Builders at the Year 11 Careers Engagement Event. They were so impressed with Andrei that they offered him a summer work placement, then progressing onto his apprenticeship. He now undergoes his off-the-job training with us here at Skills Group. His commitment and excellence in the field have not gone unnoticed, and it’s clear that his passion for the craft is driving his success.

“When I left school, I wanted to be a bricklayer, but then I tried groundworks and found it was the best fit for me,” Andrei shares, marking the beginning of his remarkable journey. Despite initially focusing on the financial side of things, he discovered a deep love for groundworks. His advice? “Never let anyone change your mind and stick to your own decisions and dreams.”

Andrei reflects on the valuable lessons learned during his apprenticeship, emphasizing the unique combination of learning and earning money. “In school, I learned about how you can learn and earn money during an apprenticeship. Going down this route worked out best for the jobs I wanted to do, so I took the chance and found something I love.”

Looking ahead, Andrei envisions himself running his own groundworks business or stepping into the role of a site manager. A recent highlight for him was winning the YBUK Apprentice of the Year, followed by a visit to the House of Commons, an experience he could never have imagined before.

“After qualifying, I’d love to have my own business in groundworks and lead teams through jobs,” Andrei reveals. His ambition is crystal clear, and his track record indicates he’s well on his way to achieving his goals.

Important to Andrei’s success story is his positive experience with Skills Group. Describing it as a “fun and practical place to learn, with brilliant facilities,” he appreciates the friendly and understanding staff and fellow students. Andrei discovered Skills Group through his employer at Classic Builders, underscoring the crucial role of a supportive network guiding him through his educational journey.

Andrei Avasilosaie’s journey isn’t just about personal accomplishments; it mirrors the potential and promise that apprenticeships offer to those ready to seize the opportunity. As he continues to inspire and excel, Andrei stands as a beacon of hope for the bright future that awaits individuals dedicated to their craft in the construction industry.

I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to Vanessa, my trainer. You have made my journey so much easier, I don’t know what I would have done without you. You have been amazing and helped me to achieve my qualification. You’ve guided me through every step of the way, I really appreciate it, Vanessa, you have been my rock.

Katie Shorland, Level 2 Hairdressing

I always struggled in school as I wasn’t very academic, so knew learning on the job would be a better option for me. I would find it difficult to get up for 9am but now I wake up and look forward to my day. I wanted to try a hair apprenticeship as I’ve always been interested in hairdressing, and by the end of the first week, I already loved it!

Jaimee Benson, Level 2 Hairdressing

I have developed a range of new skills through work including the technical, industry skills required for the job, to personal development such as ensuring I am always on time. The biggest change since leaving school is adjusting to the independence you gain from earning a salary. My advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship would be find what you like doing, and go for it!

Will Birch, Level 2 Bricklaying

Since starting the apprenticeship, I’ve become far more confident. In a classroom, you only interact with your classmates, but through working you develop your people skills as you interact with customers on a daily basis. At school, you are closely monitored and parented, however I am now more independent and feel grown up

Sam Collard, Level 2 Light Vehicle and Maintenance Repair

The most important thing I’ve learnt since leaving school is that there are other routes to success than just academia. I failed my GCSEs, as I never suited the school environment. Now though, I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship as I’ve discovered I learn more through hands-on practice.

Ben Freeman, Level 2 Carpentry

I would just like to thank you and your team for all the amazing work they do, you have provided me with the most invaluable experience which has helped to pave the way of my future. The work you do for young people is incredible!
